The modified marine propeller will produce an axial flow discharge with low shear characteristics. This propeller is widely used on portable, top entering, and side entering mixers.
The modified marine propeller is one of the oldest axial flow impeller designs. Due to their complex profile, most of these impellers are single-piece castings. These impellers are typically run at high speeds in relatively low viscosities. Propellers are almost exclusively 3-bladed, though 2 and 4-blade versions do exist. Unlike turbines, blade angle varies from root to tip. Standard propellers are square pitch, 1:1, where pitch (blade advance) is equal to the blade diameter. Steep pitch propellers typically offer pitch ratios of 1:1.5 which means in absense of slip the blade would travel 1.5 diameters per revolution.
Due to the fabriaction methods, propellers become extemely heavy in larger diametrs. Typically impeller diameter does not get much over 20" for top entering mixers. Side entering mixers may get as large as 34".
