Core Design and Purpose

The Young Industries, Inc. Model "HC" (High Capacity) Rotary Valve is a straight drop-thru design specifically engineered to handle all types of powders or granules with exceptional reliability. This proven solution delivers superior performance in a wide range of bulk material handling applications, including both metering and non-metering/airlock conditions. The valve's overall cost of ownership is exceptionally low while maintaining an extended service life.

Unlike conventional rotary valves, the HC model features a large diameter rotor with vertical inlet and discharge throats. This design specifically addresses powders with poor flow characteristics, making it ideal for metering cohesive and sticky materials that typically cause operational issues in standard rotary valve systems with transitioned inlet and discharge throats.

Key Engineering Features

The rotor is engineered with eight vanes to ensure consistent two-blade seals between the inlet and discharge at all operational points. This precision design, combined with a machined housing, minimizes air or gas leakage in applications requiring sealing between different pressure or vacuum zones.

  • Heavy-duty construction: 15 PSIG internal and differential pressure rating
  • Materials: Cast or fabricated iron, carbon steel, or 300 series stainless steel
  • Temperature: Standard operating range up to 250°F
  • Flanges: Round or square inlet and discharge configurations
  • Bearings: Outboard-mounted precision ball bearings
  • Sealing: Four-ring PTFE impregnated Kevlar packing gland
  • Rotors: Open or shrouded configurations available
  • Alignment: Piloted end plates for concentric housing alignment

Operational Advantages

The HC valve's two-blade seal design provides minimum air leakage in critical pressure/vacuum applications. Its robust construction handles high pressure (up to 350 PSIG) and extreme temperatures (up to 1500°F). Available in sizes from 1" to 36" with double-length options, the valve accommodates diverse material requirements including cohesive powders through specialized features like Transflow® fluidized rotors.

For specialized applications, the valve offers options including:

  • Rotor shaft mechanical seals
  • Self-adjusting packing followers
  • Material-specific coatings (tungsten carbide, Stellite, Teflon)
  • Inlet deflector/baffles for granular products
  • End plate purges and direct venting options

Standard Applications and Specifications

Standard configurations feature a parallel shaft gearmotor drive with roller chain. The valve operates with 8-vane rotors (4"-12") and 12-vane rotors (14"-24"). The housing is designed for 15 PSI maximum internal and differential pressure at 250°F operating temperatures.

Key installation considerations include the air purge connection (with brass lantern rings), vent connection (which reverses rotor rotation to counter-clockwise), and optional inspection panels for rotor access. The valve's design accommodates various material properties through specialized options including material-specific coatings and rotor modifications.
