Volatile Organic Content (VOC)

Any carbon compound that evaporates under standard test conditions. Essentially, all paint solvents except water are VOCs. Federal and state governments limit the amount of volatile organics found in paint because of concerns about possible environmental and health effects.  In the US, the VOC of a coating is the mass of volatile organic materials release from a fixed volume of paint less water and other exempt solvents.

VOC = (MVolatiles - Mexempts)/(Vcoating - Vexempt)

where:

  • VOC - Volatile Organic Content
  • MVolatiles - mass of volatile organic materials
  • Mexempts - mass of exempt
  • Vcoating - volume of the coatings formulation
  • Vexempt - volume of exempt
